What are they and what are the potential cell battery semi-solid?

A revolution in the energy sector could get the new batteries in semi-solid flow cells.

This battery, developed by researchers at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), is structured according to an innovative architecture that would allow electric vehicles to be powered using the accumulated charge from the battery. Solid particles (positive and negative electrodes) are suspended within a liquid electrolyte called "Cambridge crude" and sorted into separate systems.

To differentiate it from conventional batteries is just the system of charging and discharging, that in these new batteries takes place in two separate physical systems, while in the traditional storage and unloading take place within the same structure. The advantages in practical terms, according to the researchers, are attributable to the reduced size and cost of a full battery: it may therefore renderre competitive market electric vehicles with more traditional gas or diesel vehicles.

Flow batteries have existed for a while 'time, but the results have been very encouraging due to the low energy density of the liquids used, reducing the amount of energy to be stored and greatly increasing the size of the battery. The energy density of the liquid used by Chiang (professor of materials science at MIT who led the research on this battery) for new batteries is 10 times higher than those previously used.

The production costs are lower than those of traditional batteries lithium-ion battery, encourage researchers to continue along this road for a performance improvement of this fascinating new technology.
